What is Life Coaching?
When I met my very first paying client I asked her ‘What do you know about coaching?’ and her response summed it up so well. She said ‘Well, my friend told me that you’re going to ask me LOTS of questions!'
Coaches ask a lot of questions
It's my job as a coach to be curious and ask questions. I'm so fascinated by what our brains tell us about the circumstances of our lives. We might not like what the media tells us, we might fervently disagree with the government, we might believe we've been damaged by things our parents taught us, but we never really question these thoughts with any kind of curiosity. We're often so consumed with anger, fury and apathy, to the extent that curiosity has zero room in the equation.
But we totally notice our negative feelings about it all, and we've become very good at indulging those negative feelings. Pissed off with the latest news story? Indulge by ranting on social media. Mad at something the idiot boss said to you today? Have a glass of wine (or three) when you get home, just to take the edge off, and because you deserve it after all the s**t they put you through today.
This is how a Life Coach can help you
Working with a life coach helps us make space in our lives by asking new questions about the things we're thinking. Here's a great place to begin that you can try today. Ask yourself what you are thinking about a particular subject and then write all the thoughts in your brain down on paper. The next step, once you’ve emptied your brain onto the page is to ask yourself with genuine curiosity ‘why am I choosing to think those thoughts?’
In coaching sessions I will ask you these questions and many more to help you deepen your awareness and understanding of your life and ultimately so that you can choose new thoughts that will change the entire course of your life.
